Why Hybrid Storage Arrays Rock

Storage arrays typically come in two flavors: HDD (traditional hard disk drives) and SSD storage (solid state drives). While each has its own pros and cons, a third option involves hybrid solid state drive arrays. By combining the two technologies, hybrid storage arrays take advantage of each disk type’s strengths while minimizing their weaknesses. As a result, hybrid storage arrays rock!

The strengths of traditional HDD arrays include capacity and cost per gigabyte. In short, these arrays are capable of storing massive amounts of data at some of the lowest prices possible per gigabyte. However, they fall short in other areas. Hard disk drive arrays consist of spinning hard disks. From a mechanical standpoint, spinning disks are prone to failure. From a performance standpoint, they’re much slower than newer SSD storage arrays.

Unfortunately, SSD storage is much more expensive than hard disk arrays – dramatically so. While many organizations would love to move to an all flash solution, doing so is cost-prohibitive.

Hybrid storage arrays are the answer. With a hybrid solid state drive, you get a blend of hard disk drives and solid state drives which allow you to have both capacity and performance at a much lower price than an all SSD storage solution. Hybrid systems typically store the majority of your data on traditional disks. More commonly accessed data is stored on the solid state drives in the array. This allows you to get the speed and performance you need when working with your everyday data and applications and the storage capacity you need to store archived data.

Hybrid storage arrays also account for the diversity of workloads typically found in large organizations. For example, some workloads are more demanding and require more performance than others. With a hybrid solid state drive, you can manage and optimize these workloads more efficiently.
